Biology: Mammal Madness Competition
Our 9th grade Tiger, Daniel Fernandez, was the winner of this year’s March Mammal Madness competition. March mammal madness is an annual tournament organized by Professor Katie Hinde at Arizona State University, which has been running for the last ten years. It involves a series of simulated battles between different animals.
Based upon their knowledge of different species, adaptations, feeding relationships, etc., students predict which animal they think would come out on top, and receive points for each correct prediction. Of the KCP students who took part this year, Daniel Fernandez was the champion, scoring 80 points. Orlando Retamoso was the runner-up with 79 points, followed by Maria Jimena Márquez with 77 points. #GoKCPTigers!
Read MoreA Bubbly Science Project: Making Elephant Toothpaste
During our STEM Club extracurricular ( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) our students had fun while learning about the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. (H2O2) into oxygen and water.
Adding a catalyst speeds up the reaction and the oxygen gas forms bubbles. These bubbles would usually escape from the liquid and quickly burst. But adding a bit of dish soap provides additional surface tension, allowing bubbles to get trapped and lots of suds to form. This foam looks like a giant squirt of toothpaste.
This cool experiment was a fun way for students to learn about how chemical reactions happen!
