In our latest edition of Alumni Spotlight, Roberto Antonio García, KCP Class of 1980, founder of Rocol, and other companies in Latin America, as the exclusive distributor of high-tech medical devices in the areas of ophthalmology, oncology, and aesthetics since 1984. He has had the opportunity to work with renowned leaders in the specialty of ophthalmology, supporting them in the process of transferring patents on their creations to multinational companies. He feels very proud of working with Colombian doctors, whom he considers to be some of the best in the industry with worldwide recognition.
Rocol started as an internship semester at Universidad del Norte, and he still considers himself an intern, practicing and learning. He feels very proud of his family, who also happen to be KCP alumni (son and grandchildren).
We had the chance to talk to Roberto about what he remembers the most of his time at KCP and what recommendations he has for the KCP community:
How has your KCP experience impacted your life and the choices you have made in your career?
KCP gave me not only unforgettable days but also the opportunity to combine the American culture with our “Barranquillero”, which becomes an explosive combination: the best of both worlds. Being bilingual has been fundamental in our communication with our partners worldwide.
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Honestly, my “inspiration” came from the opportunities that came up. Sometimes they show up when you least expect them. I like to call them “Godsualities” (Diosidencias!)
What advice would you give KCP students, especially those who would like to take a career path similar to yours and start their own company?
First, I would advise them to find their strength and become comfortable with it, whether the path is to become an entrepreneur or not. And once you make a choice, always give more than the other expects. The results are unbelievable.
I have learned that the most extraordinary events and creations in medicine are very simple ones. Simplicity wins in the long run.
If you create your company and you are good with God, your family, customers, and employees, great things will come!
What are some of your best memories or experiences at KCP?
Even to this day, I haven’t forgotten any of my teachers. They made my life easier.
Being a part of KCP sports teams, especially playing soccer in Binationals.
I was also the Talent Show´s Master of Ceremony. It was fun and I got to make a lot of jokes.
What makes you proud to be a member of the KCP Family?
I am and will always be a KCP fan. My son and grandsons are also KCP tigers. We have a particular gene: for better or worse…. It´s definitely different!
